چکیده

In this issue of Circulation, Wang and colleagues1 demonstrate that even mild thrombocytopenia (platelet count nadir 150 10/L) developing in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is associated with bleeding and death. Similar observations have been made in other settings. Critically ill patients with thrombocytopenia have increased duration of mechanical ventilation and risk of death.2 An increased risk of death also has been reported in thrombocytopenic patients (platelet count nadir 100 10/L) with non–ST-segment elevation ACS (odds ratio [OR], 6.7; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.9 to 25; P 0.003).3 Patients receiving heparin in diverse clinical settings who develop thrombocytopenia also have an increased risk of death (OR, 3.4; 95% CI, 2.1 to 5.6; P 0.001); the risk is highest in patients with the greatest decrease in platelet count.4

Prognostic significance of thrombocytopenia during hirudin and heparin therapy in acute coronary syndrome without ST elevation: Organization to Assess Strategies for Ischemic Syndromes (OASIS-2)study.

BACKGROUND The development of thrombocytopenia in acute coronary syndromes (ACS) appears to be associated with adverse clinical outcomes. Unfractionated heparin is a recognized cause of thrombocytopenia, but the incidence, predictors, and prognostic significance of thrombocytopenia during hirudin therapy in ACS have not been reported. METHODS AND RESULTS Patients with ACS without ST elevation...

Incidence and prognostic significance of thrombocytopenia developed during acute coronary syndrome in contemporary clinical practice.

BACKGROUND Prior studies examining thrombocytopenia among patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) evaluated highly selected patients in a clinical trial setting using varying definitions of thrombocytopenia. The incidence, severity, and prognostic significance of acquired thrombocytopenia during ACS in community practice have not been well defined. METHODS AND RESULTS We examined 36 182 ...

Thrombocytopenia during the First Week of Life among Neonates with Down Syndrome: Data from Multihospital Healthcare Systems

Background: A fault in chromosome distribution during cell division leads to aneuploidy, which can be associated with thrombocytopenia. Various hematological abnormalities have been reported among neonates with Down syndrome (DS). Neutrophilia, thrombocytopenia and polycythemia were the most common hematological abnormalities observed among neonates with Down syndrome. In particular, thrombocyt...
